In late 1775, Abigail and John Adams were apart. John was in Philadelphia with the Continental Congress, Abigail was in Massachusetts, managing the household and kids, on the outskirts of the siege of Boston war zone.

On November 27th she wrote John she had jaundice, rheumatism, and a bad cold. The cider apples were ruined by a freeze. It had been raining and raining. Abigail was not having a good time, and she told him the whole mess straight.

She ALSO wrote: “Great difficulties may be surmounted by patience and perseverance.”

Look at her life, and give her credit. She took a stand for what mattered, and put it in one sentence. She knew how those virtues applied to herself, her husband, the people around them, and all the American colonies and their cause.

For his part, John Adams, when it mattered, advocated he and his fellow delegates “calm the hell down”. He did as much as any one person to keep the American Revolution from spinning out into chaos and disagreement, like it wanted to.

If, therefore, John Adams was a hero — and meanwhile back in Massachusetts his wife was handling "great difficulties"...
Abigail Adams is also rightly a hero.

Abigail’s words were not abstract musing or positive spin. She held it down when it really mattered. And her husband appreciated, loved, and adored her for it. A love story for the ages.

Together, what Abigail and John went through, and fought for, and inspired others to do... was part of achieving something truly extraordinary.

“Great difficulties may be surmounted by patience and perseverance.”
Well said, Abigail. So true.
